Walking Tour of Split with a ”Magister” of History

What is this tour about?

This tour was ranked the second-best experience in Croatia in 2023 by Tripadvisor!

It received the Badge of Excellence from Tripadvisor in 2023, which means it is in the top 1% of all travel experiences in the world!

This is a walking tour of Split with a local historian! I will guide you through all of the relevant sites in the center of Split in a logical manner following the city’s development through time.

I have a Master’s degree in history, so I can provide much more knowledge than what is learned at a tour guide course. I have years of study and passion for history behind me and I am really trying to carry that forward. Also, I am a local, born and still living in Split!

Most of the tour is happening inside Diocletian’s Palace, which used to be the residence of a retired Roman emperor but today it is the historical core of Split and its most important and oldest part.

Tour itinerary

  1. We start at the south side of Diocletian’s palace where I give you an introduction to the origins of the City of Split. There we have two models of the City (one is ancient Diocletian’s Palace and the other is the current state of the city) where I try to visualize everything I am talking about. Here is where I give you an overview of the city’s development from ancient Roman roots to today’s state.

2. After that, we enter the Palace from the Bronze gate to pass through the main hallway of the Basements/Substructure of the Palace. We will not be walking through the entire site since it would take more than 45 minutes, but instead, I will give you the whole story behind it as we visit one of the chambers. The Basement is the absolute best-preserved ancient site in the city and it was also a filming site for the show ”Game of Thrones” which I mention to those that are interested and show the images of how it looked on set.

3. From The Basement, we find ourselves on the main square of the Palace which for a long time was the main square of the medieval-era city of Split –  the Peristyle Square. It is one of the best-preserved Roman squares in the world since the original decoration and looks survived for 1700 years. Here you will hear a lot about the further development of Split and how it got Christianised through the medieval period.

4. We continue towards what used to be emperor Diocletian’s private quarters. There we will see the best-preserved chamber from the quarters – The Vestibule. We will take a walk through what used to make the emperor’s bedrooms and living rooms and we will see how they got transformed into a medieval neighborhood. We will also see what used to make the Balcony of the Palace and from here we will get the best look at the emperor’s Mausoleum (today’s Cathedral of Split). Here I will explain to you how an emperor’s grave becomes the most important building for Christians and the connection between Diocletian’s Palace and the birth of the city of Split is explained.

5. From the Mausoleum (the Cathedral) we move towards the Temple of Jupiter (St. John’s Baptistry) where we will see one of the best-preserved late Roman period temples in the world. Also, the temple will show us some interesting anomalies that the Roman builders have made.

6. We continue to the north side of the Palace and on the way, we will see some Venetian-era noble palaces as I explain to you the historical connection between Split and the Venetian republic. From there we exit the palace through the Golden Gate where we will get a look at the best-preserved city wall. Here you will hear all about the further development of Split through time, which includes the struggle against the Ottomans and the French Napoleonic period.

7. After we are done at the Golden Gate, I will move us through the main medieval street towards the main medieval square, which is today’s natural center of Split. Along the way, we will see the Jewish Ghetto, where I will stop for a few minutes to give the context. At the very end of the tour, we will arrive at the main medieval or the main square of the city of Split – the Piazza Square. Here we will see the old Clocktower as well as the old Town Hall. This is where I like to end my tours since it is most natural to leave the group at the very center since everything else is easily accessible from there.

Why is this tour different from others?

I have a Major’s degree in history and I can tell you so much more about history. By that, I don’t mean only about the history of Split. I can tell you anything you want to know about Croatia in general since I always welcome and encourage questions! I worked as a history teacher so I try and use all of the teaching skills I earned through education and practice. Interaction and dialogue are very important during my tour!
Also, I am a local from Split, I’ve been living here for my whole life. I try to use multi-media as much as possible so I carry a tablet with me which I use to demonstrate a lot of things I am mentioning. The tablet also has a free Wi-Fi hotspot on it for my group!

Using 3D reconstructions throughout the tour!

During COVID downtime of tourism, I’ve decided to learn a new skill. So over the course of 2020 I’ve managed to recreate the sites that I am showing as 3D models! I demonstrate them on my tablet as I am explaining the location, so you can get a much better understanding and a complete picture!

When and where does the tour start?

The meeting point is at the Bronze Gate of Diocletian’s Palace (sometimes referred to as Brass Gate on Google Maps), which is a small southern seaside entrance to the walls from the Promenade (Rive). It’s just next to the Genitle caffe bar.

You will see me hold a big panel saying ”Walking Tour of Split with a Magister of History’-

You can easily find it by typing Bronze/Brass Gate in Google Maps and it will lead you there. Also, you can find it via street address which is Obala hrvatskog narodnog preporoda 22.

Group and Private tours are available! The tour starts every day!

The tour duration is about 1:45h
